Final Fantasy XI (FFXI) Ballista

Augments

Augment: Chivalrous Chain

*Looney Tunes theme*

Someone, just get me a gun, so I can end my misery.  Now.

What you’re about to see may cause permanent trauma.  In such case, I hold no liability.  This is potentially more traumatizing than “2 Girls, 1 Cup”.  It’s “1 Sad Sob, ∞ Chivalrous Chains”.  View at your own risk.

Augment: Behemoth Mantle +1 [Complete]

I’m a poor folk.  No endgame LS, no craft skill, no money, no friends, and life’s depressing.  So what does a pauper like Yours Truly have to do to get a hold of some spare change?  Well, that’s fairly simple.  Beg in Jueno.  Rob a bank.

Or BCNM.

Last of 2010

I expected something better from my last augment of the year.  Unfortunately, SE is always hating on me and thus always offers me practically worthless augments.  Wind resistance is nice, but considering that I already have a Behemoth Mantle with dark resistance, this new one is useless unless I aim for a wind build.

Augment: Gilt Cuisses

It has been well over a year since I did my first pair of Gilt Cuisses, which only turned out to be a waste of gil and hope.  They were never the best—well, nowhere near the best for that matter—but nevertheless, this old friend and I have been through a lot during our times together.  In despite of all that, it’s time to set you free.

Augment: Musketeer Gun +2

First off, I would like to apologize to my faithful readers for my recent inattentiveness and absence.  Lately, I’ve been busy with school (which includes homework, exams, alcohol, drugs, sex, etc.), work, relationship issues, waging war on Japan, and other wonders that life has to offer.  With homework piling up to Mt. Everest and exams shaped like guillotines, I really shouldn’t be too concentrated on Ballista, but—hey—I can’t help it.  I still sacrifice a few minutes [or hours] to collect tabs and augment [almost] everyday (I actually missed a few recent days).  When winter break draws nearer, though, I’ll have more time to post more updates, but up until then, I suppose I’ll be quite occupied.

♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦

Anyway, enough chitchat (even though I feel like I’m just talking to myself).  I augmented some of these rather “rare” guns with absolutely no luck (as usual).  I was really surprised that I was able to snag four of these on this one server for fairly cheap prices between 100 and 150k.  I didn’t expect to get a third one, let alone a fourth, but after burning so much gil on repetitively useless augments over the years, I don’t know if I should consider their sale a blessing.  Well, they would so if I actually attained a decent augment in this lifetime.  I’m not asking for much, just something like—say—D+2.

But no.  No.  SE gives me lightning+ on these babies, not just once, but twice.  What the fuck.

And here I am in my own little world, thinking that it couldn’t get any worse than MP+8.  Totally wrong.

Even though it probably isn’t all too helpful on RNG, I got dark+8 on my fourth gun.  I’m sure I’ll find a use for it some day, but as of now, MP+8 is the best out of the four augments, as it’s converted to HP with a Cassie or Intruder Earring.  Sad.

I know.  You’re probably thinking “what the fuck” right about now.  I didn’t think it was possible either, but here it is: lightning+ on an Earth Staff, as if it didn’t have enough already.  God damn, I would probably have over lightning+120 if I had kept all my junk.  Honestly, I have a better chance of getting struck by lightning than getting any good augments.  Yes, I can finally make use of lightning resistance.

♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦

Taking a closer look at the price history, I actually stopped the circulation of one of the guns that had been ongoing since 2009:

Zina → Falco → Cojy → Sicilianschizo → Vyii

I saw Cojy in Cape Terrigan a few weeks ago (totally wasn’t stalking) and asked him if he was willing to sell his gun to me.  The bastard was Japanese, so naturally, even after saying “hi,” he didn’t reply to an NA like me.  Racist.  The very next day, I checked the AH only to find out that the jackass sold the damn thing.  Thankfully, the buyer, Sicilianschizo, as strange as that name may sound, was a fellow NA.  Comrade Sicilianschizo happily handed it down to me after his use.  It went down something like this:

>> Comrade Sicilianschizo:  With his final words, Father Cojy approached me.  He said, “Konnichiwa, my son.”  From thereon, everything was completely in Japanese, so I couldn’t really understand him.  After using Google Translate, I discovered that Father told me the legacy of this legendary gun.  This is the gun of Falco, the bird guy from Brawl, which has been passed onto him by Zina, the warrior princess, which is actually spelled ‘Xena.’  Now I hand it over to you, comrade, and one day, you shall choose its next wielder.

>> Priest Vyii:  I didn’t know that Xena had a gun.  If she had used it, it probably would have made her life a whole lot easier.  And since this is Falco’s gun, I shouldn’t need bullets because I’ll be firing my lasers.  As a priest.  Har har.

Or some fancy shit like that.

However, I, being the badass that I am, stopped the legacy of the renegade Musketeer Gun +2 after augmenting it.  With no regrets.  Well, I do want my gil back, but that’s besides the point.  Actually, I’m not making much sense here.  Forget it.

But I do wonder why Falco had this gun for over a year (unless it took him that long to get RNG from 52 to ~70).  Whatever.  Not my concern.

Of course, I also could have stopped the circulation of the other three guns without knowing it, which makes me even more badass.  Kinda.  It would be epic if I bought Welch’s gun.  I didn’t label it on the image because I only realized this now, but there’s another long chain of buy-and-sell:

Crez → Kazunari → Yeahn → Dragoncloud → Raffy → Welch

So basically, there are only a few of these guns that are rotating among players on Lakshmi.  Since I already bought four of them, it’s hard to say that I would ever get my hands on another.

Augment: Byrnie +1

If you think I’m crazy, you’re probably right.  I just blew another Byrnie in another failed augment.  This is probably another one of SE’s cruel pranks.  Acc+1?  Come on, guys, that ain’t cool.  If I’m going to get some accuracy on a Byrnie plus one (emphasis on +1), at least be a bit more generous.  Fuck, man.  I want my untainted Byrnie back.  If I had really gotten DEX+5 on it, though, I wouldn’t care about anything else I augment hereon after because simply having an augmented Byrnie of that kind shuts people up.  Ballista is a mind game, too.

It will probably be a while before I can augment another one of these big guys for obvious reasons.  I’m poor.  Dirt poor.  Since I’m low on gil now, I’m going to have to start selling a bunch of random items just to be able to sign up for Ballista, let alone buy food or do more augments.  Remember, folks, I’m always open for donations.  I know there are good people in this world.

♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦

At the very least, my new Byrnie is better than my previous one [in most cases], though Acc+1 doesn’t really make much of a difference at all.  The only times I would use my ghetto Byrnie with AGI+2 is when I’m in desperate need of ranged accuracy, which happens more often than many may think.  How lovely, though.  I get to choose between Acc+1 or RAcc+1.  Thanks, SE.

♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦

T apparently augmented his shortly after I did mine.  He caught me by surprise because I didn’t think that he actually had the balls to do it.  But—’my god—did he proved me wrong.  According to him, the “Resist Sleep”+1 (along with the other “Resist <effect>”+1 bonuses) has an approximately 10% activation rate, so his Byrnie is far better than both of mine combined.  Lucky punk.

I feel like people underestimate the “Resist <effect>”+1 bonuses.  Of course, dark resistance or stats+ (in reasonable amounts) would typically be better, but they’re not too awful.  For sure, they’re most useful than some shit like Acc+1—well, unless you real lucky and get “Resist Petrify”+1 or “Resist Charm”+1.  Then, you’re golden.

However, there exists no Byrnie to date that can top the king of all Byrnies.  Taking T’s words, I would so trade a limb for this.  I was actually about to say “organ” instead of “limb,” but sex is just too good to give up.  Amen.

Augment: Gilt Sabatons

Gilt Sabatons is another one of my rare antique items that I’ve had for centuries but never had the guts to augment them.  Since I’m apparently the main DRK of the group now, I figured that I would give them a try.  I wanted to wait until Darksday to augment because of the superstition that it increases the probability of getting dark resistance (obviously not 100%), which many of my friends have witnessed several times.  When Darksday came, I was still practicing Ballista in Diorama with my LS members, so I had no choice but to ditch them [temporarily].  And I’m glad that I did because I ended up with a decent augment on my boots.  I’m not hatin’.

♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦

But clearly, the augment bonuses don’t help too much.

♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦

I would consider Gilt Sabatons a fairly rare item.  Without an exceptionally good augment for WAR, then PLD and DRK are the only two jobs that use them, and even so, there are still other equally—if not better—alternatives.  The crafting requirements are also high, and since these boots aren’t a necessity or even “good” for endgame or leveling, they are practically never on the AH.

Because of its rarity, practicality, and lack of use, I’ve only come across a few throughout the years.  I think there has only been one augmented pair of Gilt Sabatons that truly stands out.  Although I can’t find the screenshot—if I even have it—I believe Zieger’s pair had STR+1[+2?].  Can anyone confirm that?  Other augments are pretty mediocre, as it’s typically rare to see decent augments in the feet slot anyway.

Augment: Mana Earring +1

I know.  I didn’t think that it was possible for someone like to get a sweet augment either.  I was actually expecting something along the lines of the STR/DEX/VIT variants (i.e. STR-1, DEX+1, VIT-1) like every other one of my oh-so-useful augments.  Finally, SE… finally… something good for once.  I almost cried.  This bad boy definitely benefits me in many ways, especially since I’m playing as the main DRK in Diorama now because my WAR clearly isn’t good enough.  Damn Galkas taking over my spot.  With this, I only need to make one earring substitution instead of two (two of these earrings) if I ever need to switch to my dark resistance gear; similarly, I could just double up on my mana earrings with this additional dark+8 if I ever feel deficient in resistance.  It mainly benefits my jobs with MP but my purely melee jobs could also make use of this, especially since these Lakshmi players love Bloody Bolts and Sleep so much.

♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦

When I was augmenting this bad boy, I clearly wasn’t thinking.  In fact, I only did it because it happened to be Darksday (go superstition), and I was low on my stock of cheaper augmentable items (if that’s even a legit word).  Later on, I checked the auction house and found out that I had just augmented an 800k item.  If I had gotten a piece of shit augment like everything else, I probably would have flipped out like a princess, but thankfully, God (SE) was [momentarily] on my side.

I didn’t think that the price of these earrings would have increased this dramatically over the past few months.  They used to be 400k-500k in the good ol’ days, but considering how people worship dark based abilities on Lakshmi, I suppose I shouldn’t have been so surprised of the earring’s value/inflation.  Since it’s worth almost a million, I’m leaning more towards not augmenting my second earring.  I’ve been to several servers and have only came across two for cheap (the ones that I still use today).  I don’t think that I would pay such a hideous price for a minute amount of dark resistance when I can just augment other pieces of equipment for a similar and perhaps better effect.  Now that I know its market value, I’m really considering selling my other one and just augment a Bat Earring or an Aura Earring +1.  I believe that Bat Earrings can go up to resistance+14 [or higher] and Aura Earrings +1 to resistance+8.  Either one would be a substantially cheaper alternative to this monstrously expensive Mana Earring +1.  If I had known its AH price beforehand, I probably wouldn’t have augmented it, but I shouldn’t be complaining because SE already gave me a decent augment on it.

♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦

Now, since I still have my mountain of Gold Earrings +1, it’s time to abuse someone’s goldsmithing abilities to make me more of these mana babies.  Any volunteers?

Augment: Behemoth Mantle +1

It’s been nearly a year since I augmented a Behemoth Mantle +1.  Old Faithful (Behemoth Mantle version) served me well through the times that we’ve been together, but although it had a “decent” augment, I still wanted something better.

♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦

There were always those times, when I zoned to Zitah to augment my other mantle only to pussy out in the end.  I never did another one during my many months on Siren.  Pussied out.

♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦

As my dad’s grandpa’s great grandson always says, “Don’t pussy out. Pussy in.”  Following his words of wisdom, the time finally came.  For more wasted gil.

Even though I haven’t been getting any decent augments in the past few months, I still wanted to bomb a big guy.  I honestly should have just stayed with Old Faithful, but my greed and curiosity finally pushed me to the corner.  I’ve had this extra Behe locked up in my satchel for a year, so it’s probably way past its expiration date—hence the piece of shit augment.  I shouldn’t have even thought about betraying Old Faithful.

The most that I’ve ever seen on a Behe is stat+1.  Even now, there aren’t any “exceptionally” good augments on these mantles.  STR+1, VIT+1, or DEF+2 would probably be the best ones to date as far as my memory goes.  I’m getting old.  And poor.

Just an FYI, I’m always open for donations.

Augment: Couse +1 (Part 2)

Welcome to the House of Couse, the foster home for gimped and essentially useless couses.

♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦

I guess I should have just stayed with Old Faithful to begin with.  I’ll never betray you again…  unless—of course—I get a D+ augment, which probably won’t happen anyway.  Ever.

I just jinxed myself.

♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦

The only elemental resistance that I don’t have on any of my couses is lightning.  Gotta collect ’em all.

I knew that SE hated me, but come on.  Come on.  Cut a guy some slack.  All I want is a D+ augment, and then you can leave me alone.  Is that so much to ask for?  God damn.

Each and every one of these failed couses makes me cry.

No, really.  They do.

♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦

Since this was my last Couse +1, I figured that I should try my ultimate augmenting strategy: obtain the item at exactly 13:37 on Lightsday with 100% moon phase.  Apparently, it doesn’t work.  Removing that one from the list.

♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦♣♦

Yes.

God damn it.

God… damn it…

God…

I’m just going to head over to the corner of my room now.  And cry.  In the fetal position.  For a long time.  Or at least until the next Ballista starts.

Or someone could be my best friend and give/sell (I prefer give) me a Couse +1 to augment because my stock went dry.
