3 out of the 4 LS vs LS games that we played this past weekend have been uploaded on Evv’s Youtube channel, as well as my own. With 2 different perspectives of the games, we can closely analyze what happened. We should try to work on outlining some effective strategies that we can apply during competitive level play. Feel free to post any ideas.
The most important aspect I think every single person in the LS needs to work on is defending the rook. Sometimes we get too careless with trying to achieve our own GB and this makes us forget that even though we may have acquired it, they have either: 1) already scored or 2) pressuring us to not be able to score on our own.
I know it’s not the most ideal situation, but fighting at the Rook with petras is sometimes mandatory. Standing there getting hit while probably scoring in vain does not help the situation or the healers because 2+ people interrupting you can be problematic. On the same token this can be used to let others score while causing a distraction but one must know when these instances are occurring and capitalize on them as soon as possible.
Oh dre I think your point about fighting at the rook is excellent, and should most definitely be used as a strategy :D
Rook defense is also something to absolutely keep in mind, is there any way we can practice this?
One thing I forgot to mention in my post, was being familiar with player profiles and handling them accordingly; i.e. aggressive, passive, high skill, high tech, average all around(jack of all trades?), panics under pressure.
What I mean is, playing against each other has made us understand each other a lot more; for example; jsp is very aggressive, he will fuck you up, it doesn’t even matter how, why or when, you’re already dead, you’re already fucked up.
Alright, after re-watching the videos, I have documented a few observations;
There was so much raw skill that we rely on(and of course, posses – no goat cheese plz), that sometimes, I feel like we have this “winging it” approach.
With that being said; is there any ‘do this shit right here handbook’ that I can CrossRef with?
Kind of like a game of chess, let’s be two steps ahead, and have a game plan for any situation that presents itself!
At some points, I was really confused on who to attack; naturally.. we flock to the individual who has the most petra ON(and I guess off) .. and especially if it’s a DD~
But how about if everyone on the opposing team has a few ON each? This was essentially the main strategy that the white ls used against us, I feel, anyways.
Kiting is great, or just stepping back and quarrying a bit more, some mp and hp relief would have been great in a lot of the situations.
Now, quarrying, should perhaps be proportionate to the amount of deaths you have under your belt?
EX: If I haven’t died quite yet in the match, I won’t disengage to quarry – until there is no available target, and clearly ‘nothing else for me to do’
EX2: I died once, I’ll generally keep the same strategy, and take a random opportunity to quarry a bit more so than before.
EX3: I died 3 times(magic number, thanks v!) I’ll count one round, or two, and disengage to quarry.
Please constitute and approach everything I have written as a question, and a focal point of a conversation.
About rook guarding multiple scorers, PLD or MNK should be able to stop one player. The best case scenario is to have each of those jobs holding one enemy scorer while the the other 2 DDs try to take down a separate target. The DDs can also use job abilities (Provoke, Chi Blast, Weapon/Shield Bash, Jumps), spells (Stun, Poison[ga], Dia[ga]), or ranged attacks on other scorers in an attempt to hold them, but it actually better to allow certain players to score.
Since there’s so much going on at once, the whole scenario is chaos. My press for better communication stands. Skype would be an easy way out of this, and I would love to use it. However, despite using it, we should still continue using our TP/target macros, as well, as a developing habit. Also, when you’re scoring, you should say something along the lines of “scoring ” so that the team will be able to help you if able to. Ya’ll already know that I’m a communication Nazi.
Now, moving onto the proportionality between deaths and quarrying. It’s clear that the first two deaths don’t necessarily yield a consistency in quarrying high tier items. In such case, it’s better to quarry away from the rook for petras. On the third death and thereafter, quarry near the rook between switching targets or whenever you feel is the right time to pick up some powerful items.
For me communication only goes so far because on PS3, changing hand motions to set controller down and type is time consuming and sometimes tedious. I try to always use my target/TP macro as much as possible, but sometimes I’m trying to concentrate on many things happening so I can tend to forget. I was saying if not Skype, then Ventrilo or something in ways of other communication. I can talk a lot easier than I can type.
Yea, Rook guarding should definitely be reserved for a fast defensive job like PLD or MNK. Calling out enemies with petras and GB status, ( 5 ON, etc) also is very important so we know who to look out for if they try to be sneaky. Although I never agree with simply letting people score, the situation would have to be that it was inevitable, or them scoring isn’t as important as getting GB ourselves.
Ventrilo would be good also, but I think we’d need to rent a server? monthly fee?
As for MNK rook guard, would love to test the exact delay needed to interrupt someone from scoring, excluding a double attack -or- kick attack proc.
If bare fisted is required, so be it, it’s definitely a tool, or rather a strategy.

Skype seemed like a great idea~
Also, kiting as a means to counter the mega items is something that we should try~
