Hey guys, I asked V to set this up so we can just chat a bit – seems like things have been a bit slow while I`ve been away.
Wanted to say that the BallistaRevolution team has had enough rest! When I get back from Japan, Ill be reviving the LS v LS games. Its time to return to the highest stage and clash with the best!
What I need from you guys is a list of what jobs -you- think you can play well enough in that environment, jobs you would like to play in that environment, jobs you would like to play but need improvement.. etc. All jobs are welcome here, if you think your BRD is beast, or really would like to try BLU in serious hako, put it down.
Throw it all down here and we can work on some ways to improve as a group and individually in preparation for LS v LS.
Because of the revitalizer spam, I was planning on making WAR and DRK the mainstay DD since they dont get as much from revitalizers.. What do you guys think? Should we put a ton of effort forward to try to master the revit strategy or should we focus on jobs that dont get much from them?

Ok well first off I’ve been trying to get settled in to my new apt, so that’s why I haven’t been on as often as normal. Also I’m starting class again so my hrs will be drastically decreasing as the semester starts going. Big important games that we probably try to set up won’t be in a reasonable time frame for me anymore.
Jobs I think can whoop V’s ass wit… I mean, that I can play well are SAM, WAR, DRK, and DRG.
Need work on PLD and maybe RDM since I never have gotten to really use either in dio except maybe 1 time.
Potential jobs that I like are THF and SCH (for big games)
Revitalizer strat is mastered already ty come again.

Have you guys seen that artist on the FFXI official forums? I was planning on requesting a group picture done by him for a new banner/poster type thing. V`s rendition of the team is great but needs to be updated! My idea was the to have the team in a basic formation with the golden BR pearl in the background as if it was the rising/setting sun.

I have some ideas too about changing it but just things I’ve thought of out of boredom. I like that idea of the sun though. That artist guy made me a sig long time ago I think if it’s even the same guy, but he’s very very talented and if he did do a banner for us that would be pretty damn nice.

Anyway, in regards to the banner, I’m down for anything new. By standard formation, do you mean having us standing there?
One of my original ideas for the banner had something to do with playing cards and/or chess board/pieces. Too bad I suck at Photoshop and anything artistic, so I was never able to craft it on my own.

By now, I think most of us have a strong command of the quarrying technique, so playing with jobs like RNG, SAM, and DRG isn’t as huge of a threat as it originally was. However, it’ll still be in our best interest to use front line jobs that have lesser revit potential—which means WAR, DRK, and MNK—for obvious reasons. Mighty Strikes and Hundred Fists aren’t even close to being as threatening as Eagle Eye, Meikyo, or Spirit Surge, and Blood Weapon just sucks hard.
Using WAR, DRK, and MNK not only weaken their revit power, but we’ll also have a better chance against their match-ups. Their WAR will be Irv or Varier, DRK would probably be either Apo or Qonn, and MNK is going to be Varier, Kanah, or Teska. From this player-to-job foresight, the only true threat is MNK, but it’s probably better than having a pair-up against RNG, SAM, or DRG.
On a side note, one of the most significant differences that weaken MNK’s revit potential is that the job doesn’t have Meditate. When the other melee jobs have their abilities reset, they practically have an additional WS due to Meditate.
Like T mentioned, though, they can’t reject the WAR and DRK proposal. MNK probably wouldn’t be rejected either, but even if we do happen to play with one high potential revit job, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem—if a problem at all. Essentially, using WAR, DRK, or MNK favors us while using RNG, SAM, or DRG is distinctly to their advantage.

Honestly… the “hyper” technique has been a fairly quick adaptation by everyone who knows about it; it’s truly a frightening experience when someone like V storms down towards me with a giants drink, carnal, revitalizer and a megalixir ready to fucking go – no matter the job he is on.
In my opinion, the mysticism behind certain people has certainly demystified itself lol~
To be perfectly honest, I completely disagree with Mighty strikes being irrelevant, compared to the aforementioned SP.
A 700-1000 penta will do exactly what an EES or Meikyo will do(dispatch the target)… and not to mention the disgusting critical hits before and after activation.
That being said, I think WAR will be a good choice – who can match V on that bloody job? honestly?
DRK – Pikkifuckingwoki; do I need to say more? (I agree with revitalizer not being as drastic here)

Yeah, Mighty Strikes is probably better on polearm than on great axe and can possibly reach a similar power as Eagle Eye or Meikyo. I just feel as though it’s not too much different than Souleater, an ability that consumes the user’s own accumulation of TP (WS) for spike damage. The spike damage of Eagle Eye and Meikyo lies in the ability itself. Nevertheless, though, Mighty Strikes is a useful trump card to have and definitely has potential to turn the table.
Anyway, as of now, there’s still no guarantee on what the job setup will be. With T still eating sushi on naked women in Japan, does anyone have suggestions on how we can be productive and what aspects we can focus on to hone our skills meanwhile?

yeah i agree that mighty strikes isnt weak. in fact a well used blood weapon can also be incredibly strong. but comparing them to EES… its the fact that EES can be used at the same time as sidewinder that really makes it powerful. multidirectional, gives tp back, ranged, to boot.
meikyo is a bit like MS but when it comes to a mage game, an MSd war can be bound graved and ran from, etc. you could argue that the same goes for meikyo, and it does, but even in the worst case, the sam gets 300 tp. the war just gets a sour taste in his mouth.

as for some stuff to do while im gone (if you cant start a big hako), practice the revit strat in OM, or do a low man hako and try to abuse revits as much as possible for practice. mess around a bit with your usual style to see how you can incorporate the strat. see who can do it the most consistently so we know who our best revit spammer is if we need to make a quick decision about who plays what later.
also practicing the use of hako relevent jobs’ 2hs or practicing avoiding said 2hs .. noticing their use and reacting quickly and appropriately as a group.

I agree with MS being inadvertently controlled by other means, and I also agree about EES being used in conjunction with sidewinder.
But thinking outside the box, how does a provoke >(revitalizer) provoke > carnal sound(carnal might not even be necessary if you can absorb a planned attack on a more important target)? implausible in many situations, but possible nonetheless.
Coincidentally, MS has some proprietorial possibilities as well; think critical hits on retaliation.
What I’m trying to honestly say is; I feel that we are on even ground now with the established “revitalizer spammers” and my whole rant about war and ms was to express my affiliation with this coerce thought of confidence.
Of course.. we haven’t plateau’d yet~ =)
I personally believe the next step should be; containing and reacting to this “hyper” technique used against us oh so very often.(just like you mentioned T)
Consistency is trivial, as I feel that dying is a variable often overlooked in the grand scheme of things.
Controlling who dies(lol), might be another school of abstract thought approach, but it’s absolutely worth taking into consideration. (I think dying once is enough? not sure!)

I think Evv currently has the strongest command in accessing ‘hyper’, so he’ll probably be the one to cover SAM, DRG, or RNG if needed. Like many of us have already realized, the players of the black LS have considerable quarrying power, and ever since the technique behind ‘hyper’ was publicized, the mysticism behind some players was demystified, as Evv mentioned. Having knowledge of this technique definitely reduces the skill gap between some players and levels the playing field of quarrying power.
Controlling who dies will probably be difficult to do mainly because the players who can easily access ‘hyper’ are typically the more dangerous players. Although keeping them alive deprives them of achieving ‘hyper’, it opens more opportunities for these adept players to score—and needless to mention, they’re good at scoring. Constantly attacking the stronger players puts pressure on them, and most players don’t handle those situations very well. Either case, though, keeping them alive or constantly attacking them—it can go both ways.
Since we’ve mostly concentrated on battle skill, I agree with the suggestions to switch gears to ‘hyper’. I’m pretty sure that one death is enough to achieve it, but there may only be a small window of opportunity before it ‘wears off’. I’m not entirely sure either, but we could do some testing.

and about war and drk, its not so much to make us stronger, its because i simply enjoy a non-revit-controlled game much much more. the fact that some of the best wars and drks to ever play are in the ls.. well thats just a happy side effect ;)

I’ve no idea why they would go there if OMs are even worse on Fenrir than Lak. It doesn’t make any sense unless they want to flex their muscles in front of novices. I’m talking to Kyanos right now; he’s apparently aware of this, as well. I’ll also ask Varier about what’s going on when he logs on and keep ya’ll posted.

This situation puzzles everyone. The fact that they all transferred without informing us says a lot about them. Kyanos had no idea until Byrnie told him. Maybe they told Byrnie. Either way, there are currently five Ballista servers that I know of: Lakshmi, Fenrir, Carbuncle, Shiva, and Quetzacoalt. We could work our options around this information.

black ls aside, ganbali still exists on lakshmi. uruz keithlight moyd elegy nanaah, among others. i know many of them want to play but the stage was always kind of hogged by the black ls. before panicking over this, ill talk to ganbali and see if we can get regular games going with them. all things considered, ganbali is much more fun to play against anyway.

i doubt theyd go so far over some gimpy nas.. it might be possible that they want to just abuse revits so bad and people on lak were refusing to kill them as often as they wanted? i was sitting at a dinner table with like 10 ballistars last week and they definitely mentioned ‘not killing them’ as a solution.

Damn, someone’s popular.
According to Dre, who got his information from Byrnie, only 4 characters from the black LS were transferred to Fenrir: Valenty, Lily, Qonn, and one of Irv’s characters. Since Irv has so many characters, that basically means 3 people, but it’s very likely that more people will transfer later on. Kyanos also thinks that Irv isn’t responsible for this move. It seems like they didn’t tell anyone. We were playing some 3:3 hako with Varier last night, and he seemed clueless about the whereabouts of the black LS members. He just said that they were at work, which is, as we all know, bullshit because these guys can stay up all night—even on weekdays—to play Ballista.

ok, reply from irv. he says they moved there because fenrir games have been going 15-15 ish in japanese primetime. he said foreigners transferring was the main reason.
its likely that the horrible players that made fenrir so bad have left and they wanted to move there asap to get in the 3-month sync with those bad players.. i guess. irv moved only irvines, so he’ll still be around. doesnt seem like his intention is to move any other chars so maybe all of the transferring is done?

Good to know you’ll be back soon T. It’s been kinda slow lately, and I would have been dead if it wasn’t for Evv pushing for hakos. I need improvement in all jobs so I’ll just name the ones that are well-geared WAR/DRK/SAM/DRG/RNG/PLD. On a side note what’s the possiblity of doing some hako in Shiva, Carbuncle or Quet? I’m thinking maybe Lily, Valenty, and the rest just wanted to play against new people. Going against new people is always exciting at the beginning at least, but if the competition is weak, it can get boring in a heartbeat.

Yah during the week the latest I can is the 1o~12 cst reserve, maybe, but no promises. Weekends are whatever time for the most part, excluding Sunday.

So I suppose that it was an irrational decision to transfer to server so abruptly. By leaving Lak, they lost their hako privileges for an entire 3 months. Also, Fenrir still has tons of gimp NAs, as well as JPs. Their games have no structure, and people play by grudge. I know this because I borrowed a friend’s character to play there a few days ago (guilty as charged).
I think that was a rash choice to dump hako for Fenrir’s OMs that are worse than those on Lak. They’re playing with gimp players. If I want to become or be considered a strong player, I personally would want to play with and against stronger players. Picking fights with weaklings does nothing but satisfy one’s own ego, and being on the same team as them would only piss me off. I’m guessing that they regret their decision to server hop, though, if Irv implied that they’ll return to Lak whenever possible.
Moreover, I’m not too fond of them not informing others of their group move. It definitely says a lot about them. As well defined Ballista players, we should stick together as one community, yet they play as though divided, even within their own LS. Where’s the team spirit?

Connection strength is unpredictable at this moment, I’m sharing this hotspot with a guy that plays wow, and 2 guys that stream netflix movies @_@. I can play 8pm-6am cst monday thru thursday and friday into saturday 8pm-2pm the next day, This is my work schedule for the moment.

@B-rye: We’ve considered it, and a few of us currently have characters on the test server (Undine). I’ve already read the threads and responses from the general public on multiple forums—threads which were primarily created by that Vegetto guy, who thinks that Berserk and Defender suck. lol? Anyway, although the idea of hosting cross-server Ballista matches on Undine seemingly sounds eventful, it would just end up being a waste of time and effort for a few reasons.
(1) Jobs levels and merits can be freely adjusted.
(2) Any item from the Porter Moogle storage system can be retrieved.
(3) In-game graphics can’t be adjusted, which, to me, is quite the discouragement.
(4) Windows mode can’t be played on, and therefore, I can’t change my music without resetting the game. Sad face.
(5) People aren’t going to take the test server seriously.
(6) SE holds the authority to remove anyone who they deem uninterested in testing from the test server.
(7) There’s no resupply of food or ammunition.
(8) No Lv60 gear available for anyone who wants to readjust his/her setup.
(9) Finally and most importantly, people are undoubtedly going to play uncap, especially with the abuse of (1) and (2). That’s a definite.
Unless you can provide some valid reasons to play Ballista on Undine, it’ll be a waste of time and effort to make any preparations for it. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

hey b-rye,
i have no experience with the test server myself (ive been on vacation in japan for 3weeks) but i trust v’s judgment. its very likely, as he said, that most players will want to play uncap, especially because you can gain any item easily there. we are 100% 60 cap and we take it pretty seriously.. its unlikely we will find other people that share our extreme passion.. if the other players aren’t prepared or serious about it it really kills the fun for us. we already have ridiculously strong JPs to fight here on lakshmi.
but its very rare we get outsiders interested enough to post (were you the one that posted on my youtube channel?) so let me say thanks for bringing up the idea. its not totally out the window but we really doubt its chance of success.

so i talked to most of our LS JPs and asked them in person how they felt about us doing in-LS ENvsJP and they thought it sounded fun. ive been wanting to do this for a while, would be nice practice for us. of course when we need members for versus other LSs, they join us (obviously). i just dont want them feeling out of place or unwanted.. its pretty cool of them to be in our LS.

About informing the strong JP about our planned future events, I talked with Elegy and Nanaah. Elegy kept replying to me in JP, so I assumed that he didn’t give a shit. He wasn’t very responsive either. Nanaah said that he’ll talk to his LS about it. I also asked Gnol and Kyan to spread the information to the other strong JP, but Kyan thinks that they’ll probably want mixed games.

I don’t necessarily see (1) and (2) as bad things. You guys mostly do lvl60 Cap anyways, so most gear from the Porter Moogles is not even usable for 60 cap. As for (3) and (4), you can adjust graphics and windowed mode for the test server.

(5) and (6) I can’t see as really being a concern. The way I view it, you would be organizing these matches for people who like Ballista and want to play “seriously”. And with (9), there may well be people who play uncapped ballista, but who cares? That doesn’t mean you have to play uncapped ballista.
As for points (7) and (8), in my opinion those are the biggest draw backs, and I don’t know of a good rebuttal for this at all. The only thing I could possibly suggest is that perhaps SE is going to be doing “waves” of testing with their Undine server, meaning that maybe fresh character data is periodically re-uploaded to the server as they have new things to test and new applications for testers. This would mean you could make sure for the new character re-upload people would be able to adjust the gear they have available before re-uploading characters. But again, I don’t know exactly how SE is going to be running their test server.
I’m sort of grasping at straws but on the test server you do have unlimited gil, meaning that any NPC sold items can be freely obtained, but this is not really a strong rebuttal since the best foods/ammo are crafted (as well as the ninja tools…).

again 0 experience with test server, can’t speak for that.
my main issue is just this – the track record of new/other non-jp we’ve met is absolutely atrocious. we know there are good players out there, but its difficult (at least for me atm) to muster up the energy to organize something that imo has little chance of a good return..
we play a pretty specific style, and dont have any intention of changing it up. it might seem like too much for someone on the outside looking in.
the way i look at it, if a ballista player isn’t on a server that has ballista going all the time(of which there are very few) they can’t be very serious.
i could be wrong, but my experience with non-jp players leads me to believe it wouldnt be worth setting up. :(

So apparently, there’s a FFXI Config app located inside the test server folder, separate from the real FFXI. I only did some research after you mentioned that the graphics were adjustable. I suppose I should have done my homework beforehand.
It seems as though sufficient ninja tools are available from the GM Moogle, but food and ammunition aren’t. However, 60 cap gear, food, and ammunition aren’t a problem for our group. It’s only a problem for newcomers who will probably lack these items.
Actually, one big concern is that with their ‘GM powers’, people will most definitely play uncap. Their reasons will follow those from public forums—such as “why should I limit myself to a capped game? I should be able to use my job to its full potential” or the infamous “60 cap is for pussies.” Since they have free access to gear and character parameter adjustments, there’s no doubt that they’ll play uncap. Why would they even consider 60 cap when they have all the necessities for uncap? In fact, they probably don’t have any 60 cap gear.
Like T previously mentioned, we take Ballista seriously—very seriously. We’ve had several new recruits who gave up after one or two days of playing with us. Simply put, it was a waste of time and effort. Those players had little to no potential in improving and learning, and more importantly, they were weak by heart. One intrinsic truth about Ballista is that any strong player has had his face shoved to the ground, eating dirt with the sour and bitter taste of defeat several, several times. People need to get back up on their own two feet and take a step forward if they have any hopes of accomplishing anything. Those recruits, however, immediately quit after a few games of pounding. Inviting random people to play Ballista on the test server will yield a similar result: people will give up and leave after a few games. I’m sure many of us have witnessed this in OMs before: a random NA joins Ballista and rage-quits after the match. Typical.
This is my prediction if we do happen to get a few people to play Ballista on the test server. People are going to want to play uncap and refuse to play 60. If they do somehow agree to play 60, they won’t have gear. After getting beaten to a pulp several times due to their inexperience and lack of skill, they’re going to blame their loss on gear and demand a rematch in uncap. If that rematch is rejected, they’ll start vile-mouthing, talk big, and rage-quit. If that rematch is accepted, they’ll probably lose—and then rage-quit.
Of course, there’s no guarantee that my prediction will come to reality. Like you said, these cross-server matches can be organized for people who are interested in playing Ballista seriously. The question is: “Who are these people?” As far as I’m concerned, other than my group, the NA population of people who play Ballista seriously is practically nonexistent.
However, I can easily tell that you seem to be interested in this serious Ballista play. By taking your time to post on this website, I gladly repay respect by taking my time to reply. I don’t mind giving this cross-server Ballista a shot—well, other than it has a high potential of being a waste of time, but we’re beyond that point now. Before taking any course of action, I have a few questions:
(1) Who are you, and which server do you play on?
(2) Are you interested in 60 cap?
(3) Are you interested in OMs?
(4) Are you interested in mirror-match Diorama?
(5) Do you prefer OMs or mirror-match Diorama?
(6) Do you have any friends or acquaintances who are also interested in playing 60 cap Ballista on Undine?
(7) If so, how many, and how experienced are they?
(8) How experienced are you?
(9) Do you have 60 cap gear?
(10) When was the last time that you played a real game of Ballista (not retarded duels)?
(11) If we were to host cross-server Ballista events, what do you suggest we do to spread the information and get more people?
Personally, I think the only way is to create threads on public forums in regards to this, but there will be no way to screen out the random gimps. Moreover, people have already made those threads. There have been some positive responses, but no one seems to take it seriously.
One last unfortunate concern is that some people play on PS2 or Xbox. If they signed up for the game using a PS2 or Xbox setup and switch to PC later on, they still won’t be able to register for the test server. One of my friends is having this issue, and I know a few people who don’t play on PC.

I do agree with you that a lot of the interest in Ballista has pretty much disappeared from the vast majority of the FFXI population. And in that regard, I see your point that shifting to the test server would likely be a waste of time considering you already have ample participants on your own server. Occasionally on my server I see shouts for Ballista OMs, but more often than not the match doesn’t see enough participants to start. So it is hard to see much benefit in transitioning to the test server. I do know that other Ballista enthusiast exist, but it is hard to “advertise” this sort of thing across servers. As for your questions:

Yes. When Ballista was more popular I most often played 60 caps. Uncapped never really interested me as much.

I like to think I’m pretty experienced. I played quite a lot when OMs would run rampant. I even transferred servers to Fenrir at one point because they played Ballista all the time. But then I eventually transferred back to Ragnarok (expensive transfers!).

Yes, actually. I’ve found it hard to get rid of some special equipment I used to use in Ballista even though no one plays it anymore on my server.
(10) When was the last time that you played a real game of Ballista (not retarded duels)?
More than a year ago. And I’ve never done a duel before–they don’t interest me.
(11) If we were to host cross-server Ballista events, what do you suggest we do to spread the information and get more people?
I suppose posting on the various FFXI forums (allakzham, killingifrit, ffxiah, ffxiencyclopedia) would be a start. And from there you could ask people from other servers to do some shouts to gauge the interest on their server. But I see this as problematic in the sense that you would undoubtedly receive some “noobs”. Which could be a bad thing, but it could also be a good thing if they have the right mentality and desire to learn.
The easiest thing is probably for me to just shift to your server XD. But I don’t really want to at this point. Maybe I will some day. I do miss Ballista quite a lot!

I must admit that people aren’t usually as experienced as they claim to be, especially if they haven’t played Ballista in over a year. However, I’m telling ya’ll, this Boq guy has potential to reach a competitive level of play. I was able to meet up with him on the test server. I didn’t believe it at first, but he’s good.
Since his main job is RDM, I tested (test server) his decisions as a RDM while handling a DD and another RDM. Before starting, I asked him to buff up. His buff cycle was almost perfect. The only two spells that he was missing were Regen and an En-spell for sponging Dispels and Lethe Waters. While duking it out RDM to RDM, he was even quarrying simultaneously and was able to cast the correct spells as if they were an extension to his arm. Although lacking augments, he’s prepared to sacrifice time and gil into future augments and clearly understands the necessity of resistances. He specializes in RDM, so he may be the new full time mage that we’ve been looking for.
Anyway, Boq, as we discussed earlier, there’s probably little to no chance that we’ll be able to setup worthwhile cross-server Ballista events on Undine simply due to the lack of interest, commitment, and skill of outside players. You don’t have any friends who share the same interest as you; however, it would be a pleasure to have you playing with us on Lakshmi. I can guarantee you a spot in our LS if you do happen to transfer over, since I see a skilled and committed Ballista player in you.
